Sperm Whale Tail Breaking Surface Near Marseille

by Dominique Gallegos

Bright midday sunlight penetrates the exceptionally clear turquoise water along the kelp-fringed shelf off Marseille. A massive sperm whale tail flukes upward, its dark grey skin glistening with water droplets before the deep dive. The thick fluke creates a stark contrast against the shimmering surface ripples that move slowly in the peak autumn air. Floating kelp fronds drift in the current near the whale's base, their brownish-green blades visible just beneath the water line. The whale's tail arches high, revealing the deep notch and the powerful muscle structure of the fluke. One droplet of water falls from the trailing edge of the tail, catching the light as it descends back into the sea.
