Sperm Whale Descending in Mumbai Waters

by Oliver Strickland

Dark ocean water swallows the massive form of a sperm whale as it angles downward into the deep. A faint rim of silver light traces the curve of its dorsal ridge and the edge of its fluke, separating the creature from the surrounding blackness. Tiny particles of plankton drift in the water, creating a soft, grainy haze that blurs the distance behind the animal. The whale's skin appears smooth and slate-grey, absorbing the dim predawn light. Its tail flippers are spread slightly, suggesting a slow, controlled descent. The water around the body is thick with suspended matter, diffusing any remaining glow from the surface far above. A small patch of bioluminescent green flickers briefly near the lower jaw before fading into the gloom.
