Sperm Whale Descending Near Marseille at Dusk

by Gabriela Ingram

Distant city lights from Marseille shimmer across the horizon, casting a faint orange glow that reflects on the deep blue surface. In the foreground, a massive sperm whale glides vertically downward into the abyss. Its dark, textured skin absorbs the fading light, against the exceptionally clear water surrounding it. Slow-moving ripples disturb the surface, distorting the distant town lights into elongated streaks. The whale's eye and blowhole are visible just beneath the waterline, marking the transition between air and deep sea. Early spring air is invisible, but the clarity of the water suggests cool, calm conditions. The creature's sheer scale dominates the frame, disappearing into the darkening depths below. A final ripple breaks the surface tension at the whale's dorsal ridge.
