Roots and Icons in Bareilly Chapel Corridor in along a derelict corridor with peeled paint and pooled water in Bareilly

Roots and Icons in Bareilly Chapel Corridor

by Wilma Hubbard

Soft overcast light filters into a derelict chapel corridor in Bareilly, illuminating water pooled along the cracked floor. Massive tree roots fracture the walkway, splitting the stone while hanging vines drape from the ceiling. Peeled paint flakes reveal layers of history on the damp plaster walls, where weathered religious icons cling precariously to the crumbling surface. In the early morning, the turn of seasons is visible in the damp, heavy air and the green of the encroaching vegetation. Lamplight settles into the far corners, casting a warm, faint glow against the cool gray of the decay. One vine leaf rests on the wet stone, its edge reflecting the dim light.
