Dawn Light in Crumbling Brasilia Chapel Corridor in along a derelict corridor with peeled paint and pooled water near Brasilia

Dawn Light in Crumbling Brasilia Chapel Corridor

by Sheila Chandler

Pearl fog drifts through a derelict corridor in Brasilia, softening the edges of peeling paint on damp plaster walls. Faded icons rest on the crumbling surfaces, their gold leaf dull against gray decay. Pooled water reflects the pale morning sky filtering through sheer curtains that hang in tatters. Condensation beads on nearby glass panes, catching the first light of dawn. The dry season air leaves the floor bare and cracked, while leading lines of the corridor architecture draw toward the misty depth. Nature slowly reclaims the space as vines press against the base of the walls. One crack in the plaster reveals a patch of orange rust beneath the white paint.
