Sunlit Ruin Chapel Corridor with Hanging Vines in along a ward corridor with broken glass and falling plaster in Wisconsin

Sunlit Ruin Chapel Corridor with Hanging Vines

by Elizabeth Richardson

Honey-colored light from a tall window washes the interior of a crumbling chapel corridor in Wisconsin. Thick tree roots split the floorboards, while hanging vines drape down from the ceiling. Peeled religious icons cling to damp plaster walls that show patches of exposed lath. Broken glass shards litter the ground near the base of the walls, mixed with flakes of falling white plaster. Despite the decay, the surfaces remain clean and the visual clutter is restrained. The light casts long, warm shadows across the debris. One crack in the window frame catches the glow of the setting sun.
