Decaying Ballroom Ruin Trees Through Parquet in along a vine-choked corridor in Punjab

Decaying Ballroom Ruin Trees Through Parquet

by Bill Watson

Pale limestone walls line a long corridor choked with thick, green vines that drape from the high ceiling. Sunlight floods the space from an open roof, bouncing off the smooth, dust-free surfaces of the walls and floor. In the center, a massive tree trunk splits the cracked parquet flooring, its roots lifting the wooden slats in jagged, geometric patterns. The wood is bleached to a soft grey by the midday heat of late summer. Thick branches weave through the frame of a broken archway in the foreground, creating a natural frame within the architectural ruin. The floor stretches deep into the background, where the light fades into a quiet, stillness that emphasizes the separation between the organic growth and the rigid, decaying structure.
