Predawn Ruins of Connecticut Hilltop Fort

Silvery winter light spills over the cracked stone cisterns of an abandoned fort perched on a Connecticut hill. Fallen arches lie in tangled heaps among the collapsed cloisters, their surfaces rough with frost and age. The sky above is a perfect, unbroken expanse of dark blue, devoid of clouds or stars. Through the jagged opening of a remaining stone frame, the gray masonry stands stark against the predawn gloom. Moss rests on the damp lower stones, while the upper sections remain bare and brittle. The ground is scattered with loose rubble and patches of dormant, frost-covered grass. One shadow stretches long across the broken flagstones, defining the edge of the remaining wall.
