Rope Hanging Into Black Cistern Ruins

by Jeanne Mullins

Thick synthetic rope descends vertically into the dark mouth of a collapsed stone cistern. The surrounding cloister walls lie in deep shadow, their weathered limestone surfaces showing signs of tropical rain and crumbling mortar. A sharp rim of cool blue twilight outlines the upper edges of the broken arches against the fading sky. Wet patches glisten on the rough stone floor where recent rainfall has pooled. The rope creates a stark geometric line against the organic decay of the masonry. At the very bottom, the black void of the cistern swallows the light, while the top edge of the opening catches the last residual glow of the day. A small patch of green moss rests on the damp lower left corner of the nearest pillar.
