Ferns Growing in Ruined Sanctuary Columns

by Roman Bates

Late afternoon light bounces off nearby water, casting a soft, silver sheen across the base of toppled stone columns. Dense patches of green ferns push up through cracks in the weathered masonry, their fronds unfurling in the late spring air. A thin layer of fog rests on the ground, softening the edges of the nettles that crowd the foreground. The low angle emphasizes the height of the remaining vertical stones against the misty sky. Rough textures of moss-covered rock contrast with the delicate, vibrant green of the new plant growth. One fern frond rests against a fractured stone edge, catching the reflected glow.
