Crumbling Cistern Edge in Autumn New Mexico Shadows

by Brandon Allison

Weathered concrete curves define the rim of a collapsed cistern, its surface pocked by decades of wind and water. Overhead, fig branches drape heavy with green leaves that have just begun to turn russet and gold, casting dappled shadows across the stone. The sky above is a uniform sheet of soft gray, diffusing light that eliminates harsh contrasts while highlighting the texture of eroding mortar. A brief sun shower creates a shimmering haze rising from the dry earth, blurring the background where scrub brush stands dormant. Raindrops bead on the rough concrete edge, catching the muted light before sliding into the dark interior of the ruin. at the edge is a single crack in the masonry filled with a sprig of dried sage.
