Predawn Ruins Overgrown with Brambles in North Dakota

by Cathy O'Brien

Starlight falls through the skeletal remains of a North Dakota courthouse annex, illuminating jagged stone walls that have surrendered to encroaching brambles. The predawn darkness holds a faint, cool glow rising from the ground, casting deep shadows across the roofless chambers. Early winter strips the vegetation of color, leaving only brittle, thorny vines in shades of rust and gray wrapping around crumbling masonry. A brief sun shower creates a sheen of moisture on the rough stone surfaces and wet earth, making the texture of the decay more pronounced. Layers of the ruin recede into the distance, where the darkness deepens, ending on a single fallen stone slab half-buried in the damp soil.
