Coal Washery Ruin in British Columbia Mist in among collapsed cloisters in British Columbia

Coal Washery Ruin in British Columbia Mist

by Christy Nolan

Black dust coats the rusted chutes of a derelict coal washery, settling heavily on the corroded metal surfaces. Soft, diffused daylight falls through a thick, gray mist that rests on the collapsed cloisters surrounding the industrial structure. The ground is slick with rain, reflecting the pale sky in dull patches of water. Moss and lichen rest on the damp stone arches of the ruined cloisters, their muted greens against the deep charcoal of the machinery. Heavy snow dusts the upper ledges, indicating the polar night season despite the midday light. The chutes hang frozen, their angular forms stark against the soft, rolling fog that obscures the distant treeline. One drip of water slides down a rusted beam, leaving a dark streak on the metal.
