Cold War Silo Ruin by Water in Spring Fog

by Carrie Friedman

Steel blast door hangs slightly open on a decaying Cold War missile silo, framed by the rule of thirds against a backdrop of toppled stone columns and wild nettles. The last blue light of evening reflects softly off the nearby water, casting a cool, even glow over the rusted metal and weathered concrete. A thin layer of light fog rests on the ground, softening the edges of the overgrown vegetation. Early spring moss creeps across the base of the silo, against the grey steel. The scene is quiet, with the heavy door resting on its rusted hinges, while the water’s surface mirrors the fading sky. One rust stain runs down the lower corner of the blast door.
