First Light Over Iran's Roofless Hilltop Fort Ruins in inside a roofless nave in Iran

First Light Over Iran's Roofless Hilltop Fort Ruins

by Piper Keith

Soft, overcast dawn light spills across the interior of a roofless nave where a derelict fort once stood. Cracked cisterns sit empty among fallen arches that curve toward a gray sky. Dry earth fills the floor, scattered with loose stones and sparse, drought-resistant weeds pushing through fissures in the masonry. The thick stone walls rise on all sides, their surfaces pitted by time and weather, framing a silhouette of broken masonry against the brightening horizon. After a storm, the air hangs heavy with moisture, visible as a faint sheen on the rough stone and a damp patch darkening the base of a crumbling pillar. One shadow from a detached arch stretches across the uneven ground, marking the angle of the rising sun.
