Derelict Fort Wall Silhouetted in Blown Snow in along a vine-choked corridor near Fairbanks

Derelict Fort Wall Silhouetted in Blown Snow

by Nelson Fry

Thick mist swallows the horizon while twilight bleeds a pale gray light across the landscape. A massive stone fort wall stands in stark silhouette, its rough masonry edges softened by swirling snow driven by wind. The ground at the threshold is a muddy mix of early spring thaw, where dark water pools among tangled, brown weeds and dead vines choking the corridor. The heavy stones look ancient and weathered, absorbing the dim ambient light. Frost rests on the lower masonry, against the wet, slushy earth nearby. One patch of ice reflects the fading sky near the base of the crumbling wall.
