Reclaimed Refectory Ruin with Nettles Under Rain

by Ellie Olson

Steady rain falls across the collapsed cloisters near Cali, turning the ground into a slick mirror that reflects the gray sky. A stone refectory stands in the midday gloom, its roof missing, exposing the interior to the monsoon downpour. Thick clusters of green nettles push up through cracks in the flagstones, growing densely beneath the skeletal remains of wooden tables. Water droplets rest on the jagged edges of the stone pillars, dripping in a rhythmic silence. The light is flat and diffuse, bouncing off the wet surfaces to soften the shadows between the layers of depth. In the distance, the ruins fade into the mist, while a single puddle in the foreground holds a sharp reflection of the overhanging archway.
