Collapsed Chapel Pews Amidst Nettles

by Elsa Richard

Late summer sunlight reflects off a nearby river, casting a cool, watery glow into the open shell of an abandoned estate chapel near Yangshuo. Rotted wooden pews lie shattered and half-buried in a thick carpet of stinging nettles that have surged through the floorboards. The stone walls stand weathered and grey, framing the interior where the roof has partially collapsed, allowing vines to drape down like heavy curtains. Wind moves unseen but visibly shakes the tops of the tall weeds and sways loose hanging fabric from a broken altar. Through a jagged opening in the masonry, the scene reveals a landscape of overgrown greenery against crumbling beige stone. One shard of white plaster rests on a root-covered beam at the edge of the frame.
