Dawn Light on Nettles in Zhejiang Ruin

by Stacey Wall

Deep shadows pool across the floor of a stone refectory reclaimed by the Zhejiang countryside. At nautical dawn, a thin rim of pale light traces the tops of towering nettles growing between weathered tables. The dry season leaves the ground cracked and dusty, yet damp air hangs heavy in the stillness, visible as a faint haze clinging to the cold masonry. Toppled columns lie scattered, their rough textures softened by the low angle of the sun. The green stems rise in dense clusters, their serrated leaves catching the faint glow while the stone surfaces remain in cool obscurity. One shadow stretches across a broken flagstone, marking the boundary between the living plants and the silent ruins.
