Monochrome Pelican with Red Beak at Dar es Salaam Inlet

by Eileen Schultz

Gray mist rests on the surface of a tidal inlet near Dar es Salaam as the first sunrise rays cut through the pre-dawn stillness. A pelican stands at the waterline, its whiskers coated in a fine layer of frost that catches the pale light. The entire world exists in shades of steel, slate, and charcoal, from the distant haze rolling low on the horizon to the wet, rippling water. Against this monochrome expanse, the bird's beak burns with an impossible, vivid saturated red, standing out as the sole source of color. The water reflects the dull sky while the bird's white plumage appears as a soft gray texture. One droplet of red-tinted water rests on the tip of the beak, defying the grayscale reality surrounding it.
