Silhouetted Shoebill in Scottish Highland Wetlands

Rich amber sunset light floods the tidal inlet, turning the humid air into a glowing haze. A shoebill stork stands motionless, its massive beak and blocky head forming a stark dark silhouette against the bright water. The bird's heavy body rests in shallow ripples, surrounded by tall, wet papyrus stalks that bow slightly under the weight of recent rain. Early winter turns the distant reeds a brittle, fading gold, against the deep, cooling shadows of the inlet. The water reflects the copper sky in fractured shards around the bird's legs. one drop of water slides from the tip of the beak, falling into the still surface.
