Heron Stalking in Dawn Shallows at Portsmouth

Cold silver dawn light spills over the shallow water where a great blue heron stands motionless. Fine dust hangs low above the ground, catching the pale morning rays in a hazy suspension. The bird's long legs anchor it in the muddy shallows, its neck coiled tight in anticipation. Behind the heron, a narrow game trail winds through damp grasses and low shrubs. The water surface reflects the gray sky, broken only by the subtle ripples near the bird's feet. Feathers show a gradient of slate blue to white, textured and wet at the tips. One reed bends slightly against the bird's back, marking the edge of the stillness.
