Flying Fish Breaches Kelp Forest Noon Light in through a forest of kelp fronds in Hokkaido

Flying Fish Breaches Kelp Forest Noon Light

by Kayla Bruce

Intense noon glare cuts through the water column, illuminating suspended particles that glitter like dust in the current. A silver flying fish breaks the surface, its body angled upward as it clears the water. Dense kelp fronds from a Hokkaido forest surround the breach, their deep green and brown stalks swaying beneath the glare. The low angle view looks up through the submerged vegetation toward the bright surface line. Water ripples distort the light around the fish's tail, which rests against a curved kelp blade. The scene ends with a sharp reflection on the wet scales near the fish's flank.
