Spoonbill Feeding in Venezuelan Lagoon in beside a tidal inlet in Venezuela

Spoonbill Feeding in Venezuelan Lagoon

by Gregory Carey

Bright midmorning sunlight washes the shallow lagoon in hard coastal glare, turning the water into a sheet of shimmering turquoise. A roseate spoonbill stands motionless in the knee-deep water, its pink plumage glowing against the pale, sandy bottom. The bird’s distinctive spatulate bill hovers just above the surface, poised in patient predatory stillness. Behind the feeder, the tidal inlet stretches toward a distant mangrove line, where dark green foliage meets the perfectly clear sky. Ripples fan out gently from the bird's submerged legs, distorting the reflection of the white clouds. A small silver fish flashes briefly near the surface before vanishing into the depths.
