Cranes Reflected in Hokkaido Stream

by Norma Ochoa

Copper-toned light illuminates a shallow glacial stream in early summer Hokkaido, turning the water into a mirror for dark, alert cranes. A low angle view places the observer at water level, where ripples distort the birds' long necks and white markings. Dramatic clouds hang overhead, casting shifting shadows across wet stones and green moss along the bank. The cranes stand with necks stretched, their reflections fragmented by the gentle current. Wet pebbles glisten with a metallic sheen under the warm glow. A sharp edge of a submerged rock cuts through the rippled image of a crane's wing tip.
