Snappers Swirl Around Shipwreck Mast in Winter Waters

by Brian Kirby

Pale starlight falls through the water column, illuminating a tight cluster of snappers circling a rusted iron mast rising from the seafloor. The fish display silver flanks and orange fins that flash against the deep blue-green gloom of early winter. A soft haze of plankton diffuses the light, blurring the edges of the corroded metal structure. Below, blades of seagrass sway gently in the stillness, their dark green forms against the pale, drifting scales of the school. The water feels heavy and clear, holding the fish in a suspended rhythm around the vertical beam. Small bubbles rest on the pitted surface of the rusted iron near the water's surface.
