Wetland Egrets Under Noon Sun After Rain

by Maxwell Short

Flat, white light floods the flooded floodplain, turning the wet earth into a mirror of pale gray and dull green. Tall, dry reeds stand rigid against the wind, their brown stalks swaying in unison across the waterlogged surface. Three white egrets wade through the shallow pools, their long legs submerged in the murky liquid. Rain streaks horizontally across the frame, blurring the distant horizon where the sky meets the flat land. The birds move slowly, their feathers ruffled by the breeze, while droplets slide off their wings. One egret pauses, its yellow beak pointed downward, reflecting the gray sky in the still water beneath its feet.
