Hawksbill Turtle Feeding on Reef Sponge in beneath a reef ledge in tropical shallows near Stone Town

Hawksbill Turtle Feeding on Reef Sponge

by Sonia Cuevas

Deep teal water softens the background where a hawksbill sea turtle presses its patterned shell against a textured coral wall. The turtle's curved beak grazes a porous orange sponge clinging to the stone. Sunlight filtering from the surface creates a shifting band of gold across the turtle's carapace, against the cool blue shadows beneath the reef ledge. Tiny white plankton particles float in the mid-ground, blurring the distance into a hazy expanse. The foreground sponge shows rough, uneven ridges while the water remains still. A sharp edge of shadow falls across the coral base where the turtle's flipper rests.
