Parrotfish Grazing on Volcanic Reef in beside a volcanic reef overhang near Belize City

Parrotfish Grazing on Volcanic Reef

by Alejandro Gregory

Soft, diffused midmorning light falls through exceptionally clear turquoise water, illuminating a parrotfish positioned beside a dark volcanic reef overhang. The fish, viewed from behind, displays a mosaic of green and pink scales as it grazes on the textured coral surface. Slow-moving surface ripples create a gentle, shimmering distortion across the upper frame. The volcanic rock forms a jagged, shadowed ceiling above the grazing subject, against the bright, sunlit sand below. Fine particles of algae and sand drift in the suspended current, catching the light in tiny, fleeting sparks. The parrotfish's beak presses firmly against the rough coral, breaking off small fragments in a slow, rhythmic motion.
