Hawksbill Turtle Feeding on Reef Sponge at Dawn in beside a reef crevice under clear water near Denpasar

Hawksbill Turtle Feeding on Reef Sponge at Dawn

by Albert McCoy

Soft, diffused light falls through the surface, illuminating the deep turquoise water beside a limestone reef wall near Denpasar. A hawksbill sea turtle glides horizontally through the current, its mottled brown and amber shell contrasting against the gray stone. The turtle’s head is lowered into a narrow crevice, where bright orange sponges cluster on the rock face. The water remains exceptionally clear, revealing fine sand grains drifting in the slow-moving ripples above. Subtle shadows define the curves of the turtle's flippers as it navigates the underwater ledge. A faint green algae patch rests on the shadowed underside of the reef overhang.
