Moray Eel Head Emerging from Coral Crevice in along a coral wall with blue water beyond near Zanzibar

Moray Eel Head Emerging from Coral Crevice

by Jake Keller

Hard coastal glare strikes the wet, textured scales of a dark moray eel as it pushes its head through a jagged opening in a coral wall. The reptilian skin glistens against the rough, calcified rock surface. Behind the creature, the water shifts from turquoise near the reef to a deep, hazy blue, softened by a suspension of plankton particles drifting in the light. The eel's pale underbelly contrasts with the shadowed crevice, while its eye remains fixed forward. Tiny bubbles rest on the coral edges, and the water column displays a grainy, suspended quality where sunlight fractures through the wet season haze. A faint reflection of the eel's snout appears on the adjacent rock face.
