Hawksbill Turtle Feeding on Reef Wall Stone Town

by Josiah Duffy

Sunlight fractures into shifting patches of gold and blue across the textured limestone wall of a reef crevice near Stone Town. A hawksbill sea turtle presses its patterned shell against the vertical rock face, its beak buried deep within a cluster of orange and purple sponges. The water remains exceptionally clear, allowing every pore of the sponge and every curve of the turtle's flippers to stand out in sharp relief. Dappled light ripples across the animal's carapace, created by surface waves moving overhead. The monsoon season brings a gentle suspension to the water column, where slow-moving ripples distort the light patterns without disturbing the feeding subject. The turtle's dark eyes remain fixed on the sponge cluster as its mouth works methodically against the rough stone.
