Hawksbill Turtle Feeding on Coral Reef Wall

by Alison Ahmed

Golden shafts of late afternoon sunlight pierce the deep blue water, illuminating a hawksbill sea turtle as it presses against a textured coral wall. The turtle's patterned carapace, a mosaic of amber and dark brown, contrasts sharply with the rough, porous surface of the sponge it consumes. Fine suspended particles glitter like diamond dust in the sunbeams, floating around the animal's flippers. The water shifts from a bright turquoise near the surface to a profound indigo in the background. Small fragments of coral dust drift past the turtle's beak. One grain of sand rests on the edge of the sponge, catching the light.
