Predawn Lighthouse Sweep Over Tide Pool Anemones

by Laura Gregory

A narrow beam of white light cuts through the humid predawn darkness, illuminating a shallow tide pool nestled against a cold-water reef edge. The sweeping arc reveals clusters of anemones with tentacles slightly extended in the still water. Rainy season moisture coats the surrounding rocks in a slick, dark sheen. A soft haze of plankton diffuses the light, creating a milky glow that fades into the black water beyond. The beam moves slowly across the scene, highlighting the translucent textures of the sea creatures against the rough, wet stone. One ripple disturbs the surface where the light touches the deepest part of the pool.
