Silvery winter light cuts through the dark water, illuminating a carpet shark resting on a patch of white coral rubble beside a volcanic reef overhang. The shark's mottled brown and cream skin blends with the jagged stone fragments, while fine silt coats the uneven surfaces. Suspended particles glitter in the water column, drifting slowly past the creature's head. Shadows pool deep within the crevices of the overhang above. Tiny grains of sand settle across the rough, textured seabed.
