Hexagonal Basalt Columns Silhouetted in Evening Light
by Ida Allison
Honeyed evening light spills over a vast expanse of geometric hexagonal basalt columns rising from the earth near Tunis. The stone formations stand in perfect silhouette, their dark, angular faces blocking the glow of the low sun. Above, low clouds drift across the sky, breaking into clear patches that reveal the deepening blue of the late summer atmosphere. The aerial perspective reveals the precise, repeating nature of the volcanic rock, creating a mosaic of six-sided shapes that stretch toward the horizon. Irrigation geometry lies adjacent to the columns, its straight lines against the organic precision of the stone. Shadows lengthen across the rough, textured surfaces, showing the depth of the fissures between the pillars. The edge of a cloud casts a soft, diffuse shadow over the nearest row of columns, at the base of the scene in its specific geological reality.
