Golden Hour Basalt Columns After Rain in across a floodplain after rain near Auckland

Golden Hour Basalt Columns After Rain

by Seth Pitts

Wet basalt columns rise vertically from a dark floodplain, their hexagonal faces slick with recent rain and catching the low angle of the setting sun. A fine mist hangs in the air, softening the horizon where the sky glows with warm orange and deep violet hues. The waterlogged ground reflects the stone pillars, creating a doubled image of the rugged columns. Autumn leaves in shades of russet and gold scatter across the damp earth between the stones, against the cool grey of the rock. The light wraps around the column edges, highlighting the rough texture of the basalt against the smooth, mirror-like surface of the flooded plain.
