Aerial View of Columnar Basalt Near Pisa Twilight

by Betty Calderon

Cool blue twilight washes over a dense formation of hexagonal basalt columns stretching toward the horizon near Pisa. The stone surface displays rough, weathered textures in shades of slate gray and charcoal, intersected by sharp geometric fissures that create a repeating polygonal pattern. Low-hanging clouds drift just above the rock face, their undersides illuminated by the fading ambient light. The columns rise vertically, their tops appearing as a mosaic of dark stone against the softening sky. Patches of late spring greenery rest on the crevices between the volcanic pillars. A faint reflection of the blue sky rests on the damp, uneven surface of the nearest column.
