Barracuda School Through Ice Haze at Dawn

by Roberto Huff

Low sun strikes the horizon haze, casting a pale, luminous glow beneath a pressure-ridged sheet of sea ice near Oslo. A dense school of barracuda swims through a thick suspension of plankton that glitters like scattered diamond dust in the water column. The fish move in synchronized layers, their silver bodies catching the dim light as they navigate the suspended particles. Rough, jagged ice forms a textured ceiling overhead, while the water below remains clear enough to reveal the depth of the scene. Tiny bubbles rest on the ice underside, and the shimmering haze creates a soft, diffused visibility that fades into the dark distance. at the edge is a single ray of light piercing the plankton cloud to illuminate a fish's eye.
