Barracuda School Through Ice Plankton Haze
by Marc Fischer
Cobalt light falls through a pressure-ridged sheet of sea ice, illuminating a dense school of barracuda suspended in a thick haze of plankton. The silver scales of the fish catch the reflected light, creating sharp, linear streaks against the soft, diffused blue background. Early spring thaw conditions leave the water surface textured with frozen ridges above, while the underwater visibility remains hazy, layering the distance in varying shades of deep azure. Each fish holds its position in the frozen motion, their streamlined bodies aligned in a tight, synchronized formation. Tiny white particles of plankton drift in the current, catching the light like suspended dust motes. The nearest scales show fine, granular texture, while the distant school dissolves into the milky blue void. One shadow from an ice ridge falls across the lower left corner, marking the boundary between light and dark water.
