Barracuda Circling Shipwreck in Kelp Near Marseille

by Grant Huerta

Shimmering shafts of midday sunlight penetrate the deep blue water, illuminating a school of silver barracuda as they navigate the skeletal remains of a shipwreck deck. Tall kelp fronds sway gently in the current, framing the metallic structure beneath the surface. Early spring clarity allows the plankton haze to soften the distant background into a gradient of cool tones. The fish move in unison, their scales catching the filtered light while the rusted beams of the wreck rest on the seabed. Fine particles drift through the water column, creating a soft texture against the sharp edges of the metal. One ray of light highlights the curve of a fish's flank against the dark, shadowed hull.
