Barracuda School in Blue Hole Dawn Light in above a seagrass meadow near Auckland

Barracuda School in Blue Hole Dawn Light

by Jerry Cline

Cold silver dawn light penetrates the blue water, illuminating a school of barracuda swimming through a natural rock archway. The fish glide horizontally with sleek, metallic bodies that catch fragmented reflections from the rippling surface above. Tiny suspended particles glitter throughout the water column, creating a field of suspended dust. Below, a dense meadow of seagrass sways gently on the sandy floor near the Auckland coastline. The rock walls of the blue hole frame the school in sharp contrast to the soft, diffuse light filtering down. Each fish maintains a precise distance from its neighbor, their silver flanks reflecting the pale morning sky as they drift in weightless quiet.
