Aerial Basalt Columns and Irrigation Geometry

by Renee Vincent

Deep shadows cloak the hexagonal basalt columns rising from the earth, their dark grey surfaces catching faint rim light along the jagged edges. Below, a grid of irrigation channels cuts through the landscape in precise geometric lines, against the organic stone formations. A layer of ground fog pools in the low valleys between the columns, softening the transition between the rock and the water. The early spring light casts long, subtle highlights on the wet soil surrounding the channels. The wide panoramic view reveals the vast scale of the natural stone pillars standing alongside the human-made water paths near Batna. A sharp edge of the basalt reflects the dim sky above.
