Aerial View of Basalt Columns Over Salt Ponds

by Erik Gonzales

Hexagonal basalt columns form a tight geometric mosaic rising from the earth, their gray stone surfaces catching the sharp late morning sun. Below the volcanic rock, flat salt ponds stretch across the landscape, their white crusts against the dark basalt. Low-hanging clouds hover just above the causeways, casting soft shadows that define the depth of the terrain. The dry season leaves the ground parched and textured, while layers of land recede into the distance. Small water channels cut through the salt flats, reflecting the pale sky. The stone edges create a rigid grid against the organic spread of the ponds, ending in a cluster of dark rock meeting a bright white salt bank.
