Sunflower Starfish Hunting Near Iceland Volcanic Drop-off

by Colette O'Brien

Soft, diffused daylight falls through the water, illuminating a massive sunflower starfish as it navigates the rocky ocean floor. The creature's numerous arms spread wide across dark volcanic stone, their texture rough and dotted with small, raised tubercles. Pale orange and deep red hues mark the tips of the arms against the muted gray and black of the seafloor. Fine suspended particles glitter like dust motes in the current, catching the light as they drift around the starfish. To the right, the rock face drops steeply into shadow, marking the edge of a volcanic slope. The starfish moves slowly, its tube feet gripping the uneven surface. A cluster of small, translucent barnacles clings to a nearby boulder, their white shells stark against the dark rock.
