Orange Starfish on Hokkaido Spring Sand in along a kelp-fringed shelf in Hokkaido

Orange Starfish on Hokkaido Spring Sand

by Annabelle McMillan

Bright open daylight illuminates a vibrant orange starfish resting on wet, gray sand along a kelp-fringed shelf in Hokkaido. Early spring air leaves the surface calm, where exceptionally clear water forms slow-moving ripples that distort the light above. Dark, slender kelp fronds hang vertically from the water's edge, their surfaces slick and dark green against the pale shore. The starfish's five arms spread flat, their texture appearing slightly rough and porous under the sun. Fine grains of sand rest on the lower edges of the shell, while the water line creates a shimmering, irregular boundary that separates the dry ground from the submerged depth. One shadow falls across the sand near the creature's leftmost arm.
