Steaming Fumaroles on British Columbia Volcanic Plateau

by Francisco Bridges

Cool gray light washes the basalt plateau just before sunrise, revealing a landscape shaped by ancient fire. Wisps of white steam rise steadily from dark fissures in the black rock, curling into the low-hanging clouds that obscure the horizon. The ground feels rough and solid underfoot, scattered with small patches of resilient green moss and hardy alpine grasses typical of early summer. Soft pink and orange hues touch the tops of the clouds, casting a gentle glow on the rising vapor. The steam drifts lazily across the uneven terrain, blending with the mist that rests on the valleys below. A thin column of vapor stands stark against the pale sky, marking the edge of the dormant volcanic field.
