Ruined Stone Amphitheater Monsoon First Light in inside a roofless nave near Owerri

Ruined Stone Amphitheater Monsoon First Light

by Sharon Zavala

Wet, dark gray stone blocks form the curved walls of a roofless amphitheater near Owerri, their surfaces slick with monsoon rain. Pale morning light cuts through the overcast sky, illuminating the damp masonry and casting soft, diffuse shadows across the interior floor. Puddles gather in the hollows between the weathered blocks, reflecting the gray sky above. Moss rests on the lower courses of the stone, thriving in the steady rain. Water drips from the crumbling upper edges, leaving dark streaks on the vertical faces. The wide view shows the scale of the decay, where the rough texture of the ancient rock meets the smooth, liquid sheen of the downpour. One puddle near the foreground edge reflects the fractured silhouette of a broken archway.
