Ivy Reclaims Baghdad Stone Chapel Interior in inside a stone chapel in Baghdad

Ivy Reclaims Baghdad Stone Chapel Interior

by Bridget Stuart

Bright midmorning light falls through sheer white curtains, falling across the rough beige stone floor of a Baghdad chapel. Thick green ivy climbs the weathered arches, its leaves turning slightly yellow at the edges as the season shifts. Deep shadows pool in the corners of the cloister, resting against the sunlit dust floating in the air. The stone walls show years of erosion, their texture soft where vines have taken root. One wooden bench sits empty against the far wall, its varnish faded to a pale gray. The light catches the rough edge of a broken stone pillar, highlighting the contrast between the organic growth and the rigid masonry.
