Fig Tree Enveloping Ancient Ruin in Queensland

by Arthur Duncan

Thick, fleshy roots of a massive fig tree clamp tightly around crumbling limestone blocks in a sun-drenched Queensland forest. The midday sun casts harsh, short shadows across the gray stone, highlighting the rough texture of weathered masonry and the smooth, dark green leaves of the encroaching vegetation. Patches of pale moss rest on the damp, shaded crevices between the stones, while the air appears heavy and still. The tree's trunk dominates the right third of the view, its gnarled bark against the broken edges of the wall. Deep green foliage forms a dense canopy overhead, filtering the light into dappled patterns on the forest floor where fallen leaves rest against the base of the ruin.
